In 2013, a game came out that hit me deep inside. Its characters, their stories, the relationships between them, the action, the tension, the beauty of its settings… I’m already interested in all kinds of post-apocalyptic scenarios, anyway. That’s why Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us made me fall in love and became one of my favourite games in history for sure! In 2018, I had the pleasure of being able to play the game in its re-mastered version and I suffered and cried and laughed and enjoyed it like a child… It’s a videogame delight that I recommend 11/10. And if you can’t play it, at least I recommend you to see a playthrough on YouTube: there are many different ones of very good quality! You can’t miss this magnificent work of art, let me tell you that…
Since the trailer of The Last Of Us Part II came out, I, of course, was completely hooked ( here’s a link to the trailer in case you want to watch it! ). Besides, it seemed like a gift for me, even, directed specially to me. I wish, as a child, I could have had these female characters in my life as a reference… I love Ellie as a character, I find her personal story so very rich and interesting as well as the way she and Joel develop together. That’s why I was so excited, considering the end of the first game, when I saw her with her guitar, playing some sad folk music, talking about death. So intimate, so close, so wonderful, she tells us so much about both of us, about her, about Joel… And I couldn’t help it.
So, today, June 19th, the game is finally available. And, to celebrate it, I thought of doing a cover of Through The Valley, the song that Ellie sings in the trailer of The Last Of Us Part 2. Without the image, the song is already quite powerful. A song about the lack of remorse, even when you know what you’re doing is wrong, a lyric that talks about life and death. It’s perfect for the trailer and to describe everything that’s going on in Ellie’s head at this stage of her life. I took the music a little bit to my terrain, within what fits: the original trailer base, guitar and vocals, with some violins and soft orchestra in the background, trying to accentuate the epicism of the whole. Trying to add some drama. I also decided to characterize myself as Ellie and record a video on the mount of La Esperanza ( Translation in english would be “The mount of Hope”): a mount that not only has a very appropriate name for this video, but could perfectly match the setting of The Last Of Us.
Thanks, of course, to Jordan for his help as a cameraman and to Glenda for her assistance as a make-up artist. And to both of them for their support and help in general the day of the shooting.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy both the audiovisual production and the music – I hope you like my version!
And here are the lyrics, in case you want to do karaoke:
I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
And I fear no evil because I’m blind to it all
And my mind and my gun they comfort me
Because I know I’ll kill my enemies when they come
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life
And I will dwell on this earth forever more
Said, I walk beside the still waters and they restore my soul
But I can’t walk on the path of the right because I’m wrong
